Crime Figures
Our policing 'district' of Great Totham encompasses the villages of Tollesbury, Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Goldhanger, Tolleshunt Knights, both Tothams, both Braxteds and Wickham Bishops. There is a current population of around 9,500 people, 32% of this population are between 40-59 years old, and 10% account for 10-17 year olds. The following data comes from crime figures for the dates 1st Jan 2006 - 31st Dec 2006. Three were 283 reported crimes within our district last year, which averages out as 0.8 offences per day. This represents 9.7% of the Maldon District's crime, therefore highlighting that the Maldon district generally is a very low crime area.

The two main types of crime reported are criminal damage (20%) and 'offences against the person' (18%). Non-dwelling burglaries were reported 29 times last year, which shed burglaries are classified under. Again, for such a large area covering 9000 hectares, these figures are extremely low.

On a more general basis, the crime trends for the Maldon District also show a lowering trend in reported crime, with at least 30% detection rates for the first time in many years. Comparing our district to 14 other similar districts across the country with similar demographics, we have the lowest crime figures and the highest detection rates. Basically it means that the Maldon District suffers from less than eight offences a day in a resident population of over 60,000.

One of the men was found deceased. The lorry driver who originated from Lithuania, has since been charged with manslaughter.
