Suspicious Persons & Artifice Burglary

PCSO heather Owen has forwarded this information to me:-

There was a suspicious person reported to the police on Tuesday 27th March 2007, approximately 9.30pm. They knocked on the door of one of the Alms Houses, School Road, and the occupant made sure to keep the door chain on when they opened the door.

They immediately shut the door as it seemed like the man was trying to sell something. They were carrying a black clipboard and wore black. He was tall with a slim face. Unfortunately we do not have any other information, but an area search could not find anyone in the area shortly afterwards. It makes you think if they were supposedly selling anything, they would still be in the area 5 minutes later?

We have had a number of artifice burglaries in the Rettendon area, see below;

Burglary - ArtificeSouth Hanningfield Road, Rettendon - Between 9.30pm & 9.37pm on Sunday 25/03/07, 1 male called at an address purporting to be from Basildon CID asking about jewellery.

Elderly resident tried to close the door and the male forced his way into the property causing glass panel in front door to smash, followed by 2 other males. Males entered informant’s bedroom and stole handbag and other items. When personal attack alarm went off males made escape, roughly pushing past informant.

Description of males:-

1) Male, white, aged approx 20 years, about 5ft 6ins in height, short dark hair, clean shaven, slim build, wearing dark trousers and white shirt.

2) Male, white, aged approx 20's, about 6 ft tall, wearing dark clothing.

3) Male, white, aged approx 20's, about 6 ft tall, wearing dark clothing.

Lets hope that we do not have any similar occurrences in our villages.

Here are some tips for avoiding being a victim of a bogus caller.

Tips; Are you expecting anyone? Tell them to make an appontment. Especially if you have a call after 5 pm.

Secure the door bar or chain before opening the door.

Ask for caller's I.D and a number of their head office.

Call head office and confirm this with a number in the phone book, to make sure that it is not a fake.

Check the number with directory enquiries.

Keep your back door locked just in case whilst you are distracted at your front door, there aren't other people trying to get into the back of the property.

You can even pretend that there are other people in your home, that you are calling to, to deter those who might want to target those who live alone.

Regards, Heather Owen
