MALDON and DENGIE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SCHEMES
Weekly information update for week ending 5 October 2008
The purpose of this update is to:
· provide members of Neighbourhood Watch(NHW) with relevant and timely information about what is going on in their area. Some of this information may appear in the local press. However, it is provided to NHW members in advance of any publication, so they can use the information, where relevant, to inform their community.
· ask NHW members to let the police know immediately if they have any information about any of the incidents in the update, that is, if they have seen or heard anything, either at the time of the incident, or following the incident, that may assist in bringing perpetrators of crime to justice.
· remind NHW members of the need to report immediately anything unusual, or out of the ordinary, that happens in their area. NHW members are asked to be especially vigilant for activities around the homes of vulnerable members of the community, for instance, the elderly, who may be particularly targeted because of their vulnerability.

Information Update 051008
Maldon
Overnight at Quayside Industrial Estate, the yard was broken into and diesel was siphoned from 2 lorries. Damage of about £100, fuel worth about £550. Any information to Pc Jackie Thorogood at Maldon PS please.
VERY IMPORTANT
On October 3, during the afternoon, two men gained entry to properties in Saxon Way, Maldon, posing as water board officials. In one case they were allowed in, in the other, they gained entry through an insecure door.
The men are described as:
White European male, aged 25-30, about 5’8” tall, medium build, pale complexion, short mousy dark hair, spoke with an Irish accent, wearing dark blue baseball cap, dull black windcheater, white shirt, dark trousers and shoes, described as of “scruffy” appearance.
White European male, aged around 19-20, about 5’11” tall, slim build, mousy short hair, fresh faced, wearing grey clothing.
A similar burglary occurred in Broomfield earlier on the same day. In one case, a purse containing cash was take, in the other the victim eventually challenged the men, who left. Items were stolen from the kitchen in Broomfield.
This is really serious. This kind of artifice burglary occurs mainly at the end of the week, when pensioners may have more cash about them. Please ensure elderly people are made aware of the need to:
· lock their doors
· insist on seeing identity before letting people into their homes.
· if in doubt, check with the employer before opening the door
· if concerned at all, call the police immediately.
Burnham on Crouch
On the night of September 30 and 1 October, in Holly Close, a cat was shot with an air rifle. The pellet hit the cat between the shoulder blades, paralysing it. The cat was discovered in the morning and taken to the vets, but, unfortunately, it had to be put down. Clearly the owners are very upset. If anyone hears or sees anything, please call Southminster Station or Pc Sam Pateman.
Between 22 September and 2 October, in the toilet block at the cemetery in Cobbins Chase, 15-25 Square metres of copper was stolen. Damage is £150, copper is worth about £200. If anyone sees anything out of the ordinary, or someone who looks legitimate, but unexpected, removing metal, please contact the police.
And finally…..
There was yet another theft of solar garden lights, this time from Priors Way in Southminster. Whilst that crime spree may go on, police have apprehended a suspect, who was found in possession of solar lights, some of which have been identified. The suspect has now been arrested.

Maldon
King Street
On 21 September, paintwork on a Blue Ford Fiesta was damaged. On the same night, an Audi A4 Estate was scratched on both doors.
On 26 September a flower pot was stolen from a front garden.
On the afternoon of 27 September, a window was cracked when a stone was thrown.
On night of 28 September, a White Citroen Xantia was damaged when it was hit by persons unknown.
Elsewhere
At Broad Street/ Green Street, during the night of 16/17 September, a secure shipping container was broken into and property removed
On 21 September an unsecured Grey Volkswagen Passat was entered in Beadle Place.
During the afternoon of 22 September, 3 pairs of football boots were stolen from outside a house in Fambridge Road.
Between 20/22 September, in Fish Street, the front window of a Silver Ford Puma was smashed to steal items within.
On 23 September at 1430, goods were taken from a shop in Fullbridge without paying.
Criminal damage to cars occurred on market Hill on 21 September to a Blue BMW and on Maldon Road (between 1 August and 1 September) when sat nav, DVD etc was stolen from a Blue BMW 328i convertible.
Also on Maldon Road, between 25 August and 25 September, a white, unattended VW Panel Van was stolen from a driveway.
There were thefts at Goat Lodge Road, Station Road and Coombe Road. All of the stolen items were unsecured (including a bathroom suite!).
The Rose and Crown on the High Street was burgled on 25 September. Entry was gained through an insecure window. During the same evening, a purse was stolen from a bag, whilst it was on the shoulder of a customer, from the Rose and Crown.
Heybridge
A window was smashed in Lawling Avenue on 22 September.
Solar powered garden lights were removed from a garden in Lawling Avenue on 28 September.
Burnham on Crouch
Lead flashing was removed from the skylights at St Peters High School over the weekend of 19/22 September.
Two people selected items from a shop in Foundry Lane, and went off without paying, telling the cashier they had left their card in their car.
Bradwell on Sea
An unoccupied house was broken into between 1 July and 22 September. The thieves made a mess of the property, including damaging 5 antique fireplaces and electricity cables. They emptied the water tank, flooding the building and causing the roof to fall through. They took lead flashing and tiles off the roof, as well as copper piping.
Southminster
An unattended storage heater was stolen from a garden in Main Road on 23 September.
Lead was taken from the roof of the community centre in High Street between 10 and 23 September. The theft was only noticed when it rained.
Generally.
Damage was caused to vehicles in Elysian Gardens, Dykes Chase, and Riverside Road (to 2 cars).
NOTE.
Many of the crimes reported this week could have been avoided. Please reinforce the need to lock doors, windows, cars etc and not to leave items around where they can be taken. The increase in prices of metals means there are more thefts than ever. The damage caused by theft of part of the fabric of a building is substantial – if the building is communal, then it is the taxpayer who eventually foots the bill.

Information Update 210908
Maldon
On 17 September, around 5.00pm, the rear window of a red Ford Mondeo was smashed. Any information to Pc Michelle Oliver.
Overnight on 20/21 September, the wing mirror was snapped off a black Citroen Saxo in Warwick Drive. Any information to Maldon Police Station.
Great Braxted
Between noon on 11 September and 9.00am on 12 September, at Tiptree Road, a goal post was snapped, causing £200 damage. Any information to Pc Cally MacIver.
Heybridge
During the day and night of 19 September, a double glazed window was smashed in Coopers Avenue. Suspect and reason unknown. Any information to Pc Dean Stratton.
Over the weekend
The solar light crime spree continues with lights stolen from Mount View Crescent, St Lawrence and Stock Terrace, Heybridge. What is happening to them – can anyone shed any light on this trend?
Heating oil has been siphoned off at the Doctors Surgery in High Street, Tollesbury. The store was not secured. Theft of oil is already on the rise generally, so securing supplies is more necessary than ever.
An outboard motor and other items were stolen from a yacht in the Boatyard at Woodruff Road, Tollesbury. Theft of marine equipment has been a feature of this summer and, with moves to winter moorings looming closer, everyone should take extra care to secure their property.
Burnham Carnival
Additional resources, including specials, will be working in Burnham to ensure the carnival passes smoothly.

Burnham on Crouch
On September 10, there were 3 instances of damage to cars on Springfield Road. It may be the damage was caused by the same people.
Can anyone tell the DWA if there is a link to anything going on in the Springfield Road area, for instance, football club training or match, event at local pub?
Southminster
A trailer was stolen from the garage at Buckeridge Way, Bradwell, overnight on September 8. If anyone hears about a trailer offered for sale locally, please let DWA know.
A house undergoing renovation was broken into overnight on September 10 and builders tools were stolen. The house has no running water or electricity.
Tillingham
St Nicholas Church was broken into, whilst the vicar was on holiday. The store and cupboard were forced and microphones and other equipment stolen.
Maldon
A minibus in Carmelite Way was targeted and the bonnet and grille stolen. The theft took place between the evening of September 5 and morning of September 7.
In Butt Lane, during the night of September 11/12, there was an attempted theft from a motor vehicle. A window was smashed but nothing taken from inside. Were the thieves disturbed?
In Fullbridge, overnight on September 11/12, a car was broken into by smashing a window and documents and clothes were stolen. Some clothes were recovered at the scene.
