District NHW meeting

Held Monday 5th February, St Cedd’s.

Section Reports

Moves to set up Neighbourhood Watches in the North Fambridge have met a good response. A revitalisation of other Neighbourhood Watches is going well. The PCSOs are visiting many of the coordinators.

The sections have very little to report in general.

Crime Reduction Officer’s Report

Ray Stannard told us that the problem which is causing most of a headache at the moment is in the Purley Cold Norton area. There is an arsonist who is stealing cars, dumping them and setting fire to them. The cars have been stolen far afield, places like Dunmow and Leigh on Sea.

If you see anyone acting at all suspiciously with a car, eg driving it into a field. Please dial 999 immediately. Don’t hesitate.

There are two ideas about this at present. One is that the person doing this actually lives in the area. The other is that someone is picking him or her up in another car.

All sorts of cars have been stolen

Youth Antisocial Behaviour is creeping back, and involves a fair bit of alcohol.

Motor vehicles are being stolen. This is across the district. Quite a lot have been taken since the beginning of the year.

Sometimes the vehicles had the keys in the ignition, Ray pointed out that this makes claiming on the insurance a bit awkward. So please don’t make it easy for someone to pinch your car. In the discussion, it was remarked that some people leave the keys in the ignition and the engine running whilst nipping into a village shop for something. (Another example we have mentioned before is whilst “defrosting” the car.)

Some cars have lost their contents overnight.

House burglaries. At the moment most are forced entry. One that hit the headlines was at Woodham Walter.

Maldon Football Club recently had someone go through the changing rooms, stealing wallets, jewellery etc, some car keys, and driving off with the car. Changing rooms in general are vulnerable to this sort of thing, so use the lockers if they are provided.

Recently someone entered the Town Hall, picked up a set of car keys and drove off with the vehicle which was parked in the Town Hall parking spaces. Please be aware that people have the nerve to do this; don’t be complacent.

Criminal damage seems to be targeting cars just now,

AOB
The Police Portal System which is used in Suffolk was looked at recently with a view to bringing this to Essex. The system seems to work very well.
